Prison Escape: Borno Police Rearrest Convict

The Borno State Police Command has rearrested a convict, Abubakar Mohammed, who reportedly escaped from the Nigerian Correctional Service facility in Maiduguri, News About Nigeria reports.

This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno, SP Ahmed Wakil, in a statement on Tuesday.

He noted that Mohammed was one of the convicts who escaped from the centre, which collapsed during the flood that ravaged the capital city and its environs on the 10th of September 2024.

He stated that the command had received intelligence from a resident who had sighted Abubakar in Gubio town.

The 27-year-old was serving a jail term for culpable homicide before his escape on the 15th of September and is one of many others who are yet to be caught.

The statement reads, “The Borno Police Command is pleased to announce the successful rearrest of an escaped convict, Abubakar Mohammed, 27, who was serving a jail term for culpable homicide and had escaped from the medium-security custodial centre in Maiduguri.”

“On September 15, 2024, at about 1500 hours, a resident of Bulakara Ward, Gubio LGA, alerted the police after sighting Abubakar in Gubio town following his escape from the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Maiduguri, due to the collapse of the fence wall caused by the flood disaster.”

“Following a swift response by a police patrol team, the escaped convict was apprehended. Abubakar will be handed over to the Nigerian Correctional Service, and efforts are ongoing to locate any other convicted felons who may be in the area.”

Recall that about 280 inmates had escaped from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre following severe flooding in the capital city.
