Lagos Impounds 28 Vehicles For Causing Traffic Congestion

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has seized 28 vehicles for obstructing traffic, according to a statement released by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, on Saturday.

The statement, signed by Bolanle Ogunlola, Deputy Director of Public Relations, revealed that the operation was carried out in collaboration with the state’s task force for enforcing traffic laws, News About Nigeria reports.

Osiyemi explained that the vehicles were impounded at the Berger Bus Stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (outbound Lagos) for illegally using a designated layby as a makeshift garage.

He said that the ministry is committed to maintaining order and ensuring smooth traffic flow in Lagos, adding that enforcement efforts will continue to keep the roads free of obstructions.

In a related development, the Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has urged residents to stop dumping waste on road medians.

Speaking at the Lagos Recyclers Association’s 3rd Annual Conference and Exhibition, Gbadegesin warned that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted.

Gbadegesin further explained that while LAWMA regularly clears waste from road medians, enforcement teams have resumed arresting violators.

“Concerning our waste collectors, we have been placing sanctions and suspending those of them who do not clear waste regularly and replacing those who do not have the capacity.

“Though, LAWMA clears the waste found on the road medians daily, but now, we have teams going out and conducting arrests,” Gbadegesin said.

He disclosed that over 1,000 people have been arrested for waste violations since last year, though enforcement was briefly relaxed during the Christmas period due to economic challenges.

He warned that the arrests have now resumed and LAWMA will continue to sanction waste collectors who fail to clear waste regularly or lack the capacity to do so effectively.
