Edo Poll: 'It Is Illegal For Any Party To Continue Campaign From Midnight' - INEC Says, End Campaigns

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), has proscribed the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) from participating in the gubernatorial elections.

The IGP’s directive comes ahead of the Edo state governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024.

News About Nigeria gathered that the IGP deployed 43,000 security personnel including the police, military and other security operatives for the state election.

Speaking at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stakeholders meeting in Benin on Wednesday Egbetokun said securing voters and electoral materials is the duty of the Police.

He further stated that the police operatives will be supported by other security agencies to ensure a credible election process.

“No private or state-owned security apparatus would be allowed to operate during and after the election,” the IGP said.

“All quasi-security operatives in Edo State should refrain from participating in Edo election. Activities of Edo State Security Network which has been suspended remain suspended.

“35,000 Police officers have been deployed for the election while 8,000 security agents drawn from other national agencies will support the Police.” He added.

Egbetokun assured that the entry and exit points to the state would be secured by the military.

Speaking further, Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, assured that the electoral commission would maintain standard professionalism in its conduct.

According to Mr. Yakubu the commission all modalities have been put in place for the transportation of election materials.
