The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition party, says it is aware of the people behind the #EndBadGovernance protests that swept across the country in August.
News About Nigeria reports that Nigerians took to the streets in many cities between August 1 and 10 to protest against the prevailing hardship in the country.
Recall that the 10-day protest was marred by looting and arson in the north.
The protest was spearheaded by the Take-It-Back Movement and civil society organisations.
Before the marches kicked off, the federal government pleaded with youths to shelve the demonstrations.
Speaking on Monday at a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Abuja, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, stated that the root cause of the protests was hunger and urged the federal government to address this issue rather than targeting Nigerians.
Ologunagba made this statement against the backdrop of the arrest of Joe Ajearo, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President.
The PDP spokesman said, “There is a need for caution. There was a protest in this country, the government did not do anything. You arrest some people and say they were terrorists, and you charge them to court. You say some people were the sponsors of the protest.
“We know those who sponsored the protest. The sponsor is hunger. The president and his people should arrest hunger, and there will be no problem. Let your policies that are draconian, that are bringing people to their knees. This is the season schools are resuming, we know what people are going through.”
