The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Aniekan Peter, has refuted reports suggesting the association is embroiled in a new crisis, describing them as misleading.

The clarification comes amid rumours that the NMA is facing internal strife over alleged financial mismanagement by the former leadership under Prof. Emem Abraham, News About Nigeria reports.

Addressing the media after a leadership retreat in Uyo on Saturday, Dr. Peter dismissed claims of financial impropriety.

He said that at no point had Prof. Abraham been implicated in any financial misconduct.

“As the Chairman of NMA Akwa Ibom State, along with my executives, I wish to clarify that the reports are misleading and did not originate from NMA AKS,” Dr. Peter stated.

He explained that the internal audit report, which was presented during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), had not been formally adopted due to inconsistencies, including the lack of a signature from the committee’s secretary.

As a result, the congress decided to appoint external auditors for an unbiased review of the association’s accounts.

“We are still awaiting the necessary documents from the audit committee chairman for submission to external auditors, as decided by the congress,” Peter explained, adding that Prof. Abraham has not been implicated.

Dr. Peter assured that the results of the external audit will be transparent and any individuals found guilty of misconduct will face consequences.

“The outcome of the external audit will be discussed openly in congress and shared with the public. Whoever is involved will be held accountable.”

He urged the public to disregard misleading reports from individuals trying to tarnish the image and traditions of the NMA.
