Olumide Akpata, Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Edo, has identified leadership deficiency as the root of the state’s predicaments, News About Nigeria reports.
During an interview on Arise TV, Akpata lambasted the incumbent PDP government, describing it “wicked and irresponsible.”
Akpata cited exemplary governance in Abia and Anambra as a testament to the potency of effective leadership.
He expressed dismay at the state’s dilapidated infrastructure, likening Uhiele Grammar School to a “war zone.”
“Everything rises and falls on leadership, and it is the absence of leadership that has put us where we are. We have been victims of irresponsible leadership,” he declared.
He emphasised that democracy’s core definition prioritises people, but governments have neglected this fundamental aspect.
Akpata stressed that leadership is the primary issue and that a leader must take charge to serve the people.
Akpata denounced the current PDP government, calling it “wicked” and “irresponsible,” and expressed disappointment in the neglect.
Akpata learnt that leadership is crucial and that good leadership can make a difference, as seen in Abia and Anambra states.
As a new politician, the LP candidate said he faced a significant trust deficit due to people’s past negative experiences.
“My first challenge as a new politician is confronting people who don’t believe anymore. The trust deficit is so wide,” he said.
Akpata likened people’s distrust to seeking the original sin, citing years of neglect and lumping all politicians together.
He emphasised the need to educate people and establish trust, acknowledging risks but highlighting the importance of pedigree and track records.
Akpata pointed out individuals who have switched parties, wearing different jerseys, and urged people to evaluate their actions.
If elected, Akpata’s administration will focus on four key areas: electricity, agriculture, security, and education and health, to drive development and improve citizens’ lives.
