Engr. Godwins Omobayo has maintained that he is not distracted by the ongoing litigation against his office as he remains the authentic deputy governor of Edo State.
According to him, he still performs his official duties as guaranteed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Omobayo said this during a solidarity visit by the leadership and members of the three recognized transport unions in Edo State.
The unions are the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and the Edo State Drivers Welfare Scheme.
According to him, he is focused on supporting his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, for the economic prosperity and transformation of Edo State.
He also appreciated the unions for their overwhelming support since he assumed office.
Also, he commended their loyalty to Governor Godwin Obaseki.
News About Nigeria reports that Omobayo’s claim comes after the judgement of the Appeal Court, which affirmed the decision of the lower court that Philip Shaibu remains the deputy governor of Edo State.
The appellate court had also dismissed the suit seeking to uphold Shaibu’s impeachment brought before it by the Edo State House of Assembly.
The court had also annulled the appointment of Omobayo as the Edo Deputy Governor, warning that any individual, aside from Shaibu, parading themselves as deputy governor would face legal consequences.
Recall that the embattled deputy governor was impeached on April 8, 2024, following the adoption of the report of a seven-man committee set up by the state Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to investigate allegations of misconduct against him.
Following his impeachment, Obaseki appointed Omobayo as the new deputy governor.
