A driver identified as Lasisi Sodiq has killed a final year student of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU), Esu Ema, News About Nigeria reports.

The tragedy was made public by the management of the institution on Thursday in a release by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.

In the statement, the school revealed that Ema was killed by the driver near the campus of the institution.

Giving details, the institution disclosed that the deceased student with the matriculation number FRM/2019/041 was knocked down and killed by a Lexus car with the number plate ABJ 427 LQ driven by Sodiq.

The deceased student, who was said to be going to the campus to submit her final year project to her supervisor, was crossing the Ife-Ibadan Road near the campus gate when the accident happened.

The statement reads, “The members of the Federal Road Safety Corps came to recover the corpse of the student and deposited it at the mortuary of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex at about 12:35 pm, while the officers of the Nigerian Police have arrested the driver for investigation and further necessary action.”

Also, the OAU Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Simeon Bamire, has sent a condolence message to the parents of the deceased through the Dean of Students Affairs of the university, Prof. Adeolu Odedire.

“It is very sad to lose a domestic animal. How can anyone quantify the loss of a child, most especially a grown-up child who was a young, promising adult with a lot of potential? A final year student for that matter,” the statement quoted Bamire as saying.
