Police Nab Suspect With Defaced Pistol, Cannabis In Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspect found with firearms and suspected cannabis sativa, News About Nigeria reports.

ASP Timfon John, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed this information to journalists in Uyo on Tuesday.

The suspect was arrested during a routine stop-and-search operation in the Ibiono Ibom area.

The suspect is a native of Ikot Obong village and was found with a firearm and substances suspected to be cannabis sativa while riding a commercial motorcycle.

Upon searching the suspect, an English Baretta Pistol with a defaced breech number was found in his possession.

Additionally, large quantities of suspected cannabis sativa were concealed in his rainboot.

The suspect claimed that the firearms belonged to one of his friends during interrogation.

The police said they are investigating to apprehend other members of the gang.

The force said that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Waheed Ayilara, has reiterated the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Akwa Ibom.

Ayilara urged residents to report any suspicious people or movements to the nearest police station.

On Monday, the Nigerian Army, 6 Battalion Ibagwa, urged residents of Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State not to panic as it commenced the demolition of unserviceable ammunition and explosives at 6Bn Range Area.

The exercise, which starts on August 19, 2024, is expected to last until Thursday, August 22.

The state governor, Pastor Umo Eno, had announced the state government’s plans for an aviation village near the Victor Attah International Airport.
