The police command in Bauchi has said its operatives have arrested one Ibrahim Liman, a 23-year-old, for the alleged kidnapping and killing of Kamal Aliyu, an 8-year-old boy, in Rinjin-Gani community, Toro LGA of the state.
News About Nigeria reports that Ahmed Wakil, Bauchi police spokesperson, disclosed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday.
Wakil said the suspect was arrested last Thursday after receiving a tip-off and acting on credible intelligence.
“On August 4, 2024, Kamal Aliyu was reported kidnapped by unknown individuals in Rinjin Gani village in Toro LGA of Bauchi state. In response, the Division Police Officer, DPO of Toro Police Divisional headquarters launched an intensive search and rescue operation in the area,” the statement reads.
“Acting on credible intelligence and a tip-off on August 15, 2024, the Divisional Police Officer apprehended Ibrahim Mohamed Liman, a 23-year-old male resident of the same Rinjin Gani community and a close neighbour to the victim’s family.”
Wakil said that the suspect admitted to plotting with an accomplice to abduct Aliyu by deceiving him into thinking he was on a mission to deliver a message to Ali Rinji, his father.
The police spokesperson said the suspect “admitted to taking the young boy into a nearby bush, where they killed him and buried his body in a shallow grave.”
“The suspect also disclosed that they had demanded a ransom of two hundred thousand naira from the victim’s father. Although the father complied and took the ransom money to the designated location, the suspects were unable to retrieve it due to the presence of security operatives in the nearby area,” Wakil said.
Wakil said Auwal Musa, commissioner of police in Bauchi, has directed the case to be transferred to the state criminal investigation department for a thorough and discreet probe.
