UNIZIK Vice Chancellor Summoned By Reps Over Poor Project Execution

The acting Vice Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka, Anambra State, Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, has been summoned by the House of Representatives over the alleged poor execution of a project.

News About Nigeria reports that her summon was made public by the House Chairperson on University Education, Abubakar Fulata in a statement released on Wednesday.

In the statement, Fulata disclosed that the invitation follows the committee’s earlier visit to UNIZIK in Awka.

He further explained that the invitation was not a witch-hunt for the vice-chancellor.

Giving details, the Committee Chairperson noted that the committee would not fold its arms and allow certain things that would halt the expected progress in the nation’s universities to persist, adding that they observed that the data presented in the documents submitted by the vice-chancellor did not align with the reality regarding project execution.

Fulata also wondered how the university management would claim to have generated N1.5 billion in the preceding year but said it spent about N3 billion on the same internally generated revenue.

He noted that spending money without appropriation by the parliament was a gross violation of the constitution, adding that the presentation of a “cooked figure” undermines the integrity of the entire university management team.

Fulata also explained that the observed discrepancies and infractions in the documents presented are the primary reasons why the vice-chancellor must appear before it in the National Assembly with relevant documents for further legislative actions.

He warned other institutions to not take that path of inconsistency as the Reps would ensure that perpetrators are severely punished.
