Former U.S. President Barack Obama has unveiled his 2024 summer playlist, continuing his tradition of sharing his favourite tracks with the public.
News About Nigeria reports that this year’s playlist features music from global artistes, including Nigerian stars Tems and Rema, as well as South African sensation Tyla.
Tems made the list with her hit single “Love Me Jeje,” a track that samples Seyi Sodimu and Shaffy Bello’s classic of the same name.
This marks her third appearance on Obama’s summer playlist, following her inclusion in 2022 with “Vibe Out” and in 2023 with her BET-winning single “Me & U.”
Rema’s energetic track “Yayo” from his sophomore album “HEIS” also earned a spot on Obama’s 2024 playlist.
This isn’t the first time Rema has caught Obama’s attention; his breakout single “Iron Man” was featured on the former president’s 2019 summer playlist.
South African artist Tyla also made the cut with her hit “Jump,” a collaboration with Gunna and Skillibeng,.
Obama’s playlist also includes tracks from renowned artists such as Beyoncé with “Texas Hold ‘Em,” Shaboozy’s “A Bar Song,” H.E.R.’s “Process,” and Bad Bunny & Fied’s “Perro Negro.” Other notable mentions include Bob Marley’s “Them Belly Full” featuring The Wailers, “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me” by The Miracles, and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Wanna Be” featuring GloRilla.
Sharing the playlist on social media, Obama expressed his hope that people would discover something new to enjoy.
“With summer winding down, I wanted to share some songs that I’ve been listening to lately—and it wouldn’t be my playlist if it didn’t include an eclectic mix. I hope you find something new to listen to,” he tweeted.
This year’s playlist, which includes two Afrobeats tracks, is slightly scaled down from last year’s list, which featured four African entries, including songs by Burna Boy, Asake, Olamide, and Davido.
