President Bola Tinubu says his administration is committed to providing effective governance.
News About Nigeria reports he made this statement during a nationwide address on Sunday in Abuja, amid the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.
He justified his decision to eliminate petrol subsidies, citing the need to rectify decades of economic mismanagement.
Tinubu assured citizens that his focus is on delivering good governance, highlighting significant revenue growth in the first half of 2024, exceeding N9.1 trillion, due to efforts to curb leakages, automate processes, and secure funding without additional burdens on the public.
The President noted improvements in productivity in the non-oil sector, capitalising on current economic opportunities.
He urged patience, cautioning against undermining the economy’s recovery and warning against allowing “enemies of democracy” to promote an unconstitutional agenda that could hinder Nigeria’s democratic progress.
Tinubu emphasised the importance of maintaining peace, law, and order, tasking security operatives with upholding human rights conventions.
He said that the paramount importance of ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians.
“I can assure you that I am focused fully on delivering the governance to the people – good governance for that matter,” Tinubu said.
Therefore, Tinubu called for patience, saying, “The economy is recovering; Please, don’t shut out its oxygen.
“Now that we have been enjoying democratic governance for 25 years, do not let the enemies of democracy use you to promote an unconstitutional agenda that will set us back on our democratic journey. Forward ever, backward never!”
He tasked security operatives with maintaining peace, law, and order in the country, following the necessary conventions on human rights, of which Nigeria is a signatory.
“The safety and security of all Nigerians are paramount,” he concluded.
