Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Mourns Onyeka Onwenu

Onyeka Onwenu To Be Buried Today 

The Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on Wednesday mourned Nigerian music icon, Onyeka Onwenu.

News About Nigeria had reported that Onwenu slumped and died on Tuesday after her performance at the 80th birthday of the owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Mrs. Stella Okoli.

The veteran singer and actress died at the age of 72.

Reacting to the news of Onwenu’s demise in a post on her X account on Wednesday, the former Finance Minister said that she was shocked to hear of her death.

While noting that the singer was a sister to Okonjo-Iweala, she revealed that she had known the deceased from their undergraduate days.

She further prayed that God would give her family the fortitude to bear the loss and also grant her eternal rest.

Her condolence post reads, “Shocked to learn of the death of a talented Sister and Nigerian icon, legendary artist, singer songwriter and Human rights activist Onyeka Onwenu whom I have known since undergraduate days when she attended Wellesley College, Massachusetts. Deeply saddened. My heart goes out to her children and family! May her soul rest in perfect peace!”

Similarly, President Bola Tinubu has also extended his condolences to the family of the late iconic singer.

Speaking in a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu said, “President Tinubu celebrates the life of the versatile and highly gifted artiste who applied herself to the whole gamut of artistic enterprise and expression, bringing joy and laughter to many. The President condoles with the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and the numerous fans of the departed star over this immeasurable loss.”
