Western Nations Issue Security Alerts Ahead Of Planned Protests In Nigeria

The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to respecting citizens’ rights to peaceful protest, emphasizing that the administration’s purpose is to serve the people, not dominate them.

News About Nigeria reports report that Ajuri Ngelale, the presidential spokesperson spoke in an interview with TVC.

Ngelale addressed concerns about the government’s stance on upcoming protests, stating that no authority can prevent Nigerians from exercising their right to peaceful assembly.

Ngelale acknowledged fears about the potential hijacking of protests but reassured citizens of President Tinubu’s dedication to improving the economy despite inherited liabilities.

He stated that development takes time and patience is necessary, highlighting various government efforts to improve living standards, including credit facilities for MSMEs, infrastructure reconstruction, and social investment programs.

While acknowledging the challenges faced by Nigerians, Ngelale pointed out that some government initiatives may take time to yield tangible results.

He cited examples of ongoing projects, such as road reconstruction and seaport expansion, which will create employment and support foreign investment.

Ngelale also stressed the importance of effective implementation at federal, state, and local levels to ensure policies benefit households.

Additionally, he mentioned social investment programs already in motion, like the Student Loan Scheme and Consumer Credit Program, which demonstrate the administration’s commitment to addressing economic pressures.

Ngelale described a recent Supreme Court judgment granting local government councils fiscal autonomy as “restructuring in practice,” emphasizing that Nigerians should give it time to see the positive impact on their livelihoods.

The demonstration, dubbed ’10 Days of Rage’, is being organised against the economic hardship in the country.

The federal and state governments, including President Bola Tinubu, have appealed to the youths to shelve the planned protest.

Security agencies said the protest will be hijacked by some elements planning to perpetuate violence.
