President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding democratic principles, including the right to peaceful protest.

News About Nigeria reports that he said that his government will not tolerate demonstrations that result in violence, destruction of property, and loss of life.

Tinubu made this statement during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he received Letters of Credence from newly appointed ambassadors.

The President’s comments come amidst growing calls for nationwide protests against economic hardship, scheduled for August 1, 2024.

Tinubu acknowledged the importance of peaceful protests, citing his own experiences during the military era when he engaged in demonstrations without resorting to violence.

He emphasised the need to maintain Nigeria’s 25 years of unbroken democracy.

Tinubu also highlighted the significance of Nigeria-US relations, describing them as “rich” and built on shared democratic values.

He expressed appreciation for the US government’s recognition of Nigeria’s strategic role as Africa’s largest democracy and called for increased partnership and cooperation on the continent.

The US Ambassador, Richard Mills Jr., reaffirmed his country’s support for Nigeria’s democracy and pledged to work towards expanding cooperation on shared goals and democratic values.

He also announced the establishment of a special office at the US Embassy to collaborate with Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on cybercrimes.

In separate meetings, Tinubu received Letters of Credence from the High Commissioners of Malaysia and Botswana.

He discussed improving trade balances with Malaysia and exploring opportunities for cooperation in education, financial services, and agriculture.

With Botswana, Tinubu expressed interest in developing robust cultural and economic cooperation, particularly in livestock development and vaccine production.

The president’s engagements with the ambassadors underscore his administration’s commitment to strengthening international relations, promoting democracy, and driving economic growth.

Meanwhile, the planned protests against economic hardship continue to gain momentum on social media, with organisers calling for an end to bad governance in Nigeria.
