The Igbo community is in mourning following the passing of Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, a renowned leader and president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.

News About Nigeria reports that Iwuanyanwu was 82 years old at the time of his death.

His son, Jide, made the announcement in a statement, revealing that Iwuanyanwu succumbed to a brief illness on Thursday, July 25, 2024.

The family has said it will also release details of his burial arrangements soon.

Meanwhile, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo group is yet to receive official confirmation of Iwuanyanwu’s passing.

Spokesperson Chiedozie Ogbonnia stated that they are awaiting an official announcement before commenting further.

Iwuanyanwu’s death marks the second time a president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo has passed away while in office, following the demise of his predecessor, George Obiozor.

Born on September 4, 1942, Iwuanyanwu had a distinguished career, serving as chairman of the Council of Elders of Ohanaeze Ndigbo before becoming president-general.

He also made unsuccessful bids for the Nigerian presidency.

A graduate of engineering from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Iwuanyanwu was a multifaceted individual who founded the Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club, now known as Heartland Football Club, which has won numerous local and international championships.

Additionally, he was the publisher of the Daily Champion newspaper, leaving behind a legacy in various fields.

The statement stated that the burial details would be announced later by the family after due consultations.

He served as the 11th President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

The late Iwuanyanwu leaves behind his wife, Lady Princess Frances Iwuanyanwu, as well as his numerous children and grandchildren.
