Kano Emirship: Court Stops Ado-Bayero, Others From Parading As Emirs

On Monday, a High Court sitting in Kano State granted a perpetual injunction restraining the embattled 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero, and four other dethroned emirs from acting as emirs.

News About Nigeria reports that the four other deposed Emirs who were also ordered to stop acting as Emirs include, the former Bichi emir, Alhaji Nasiru Ado-Bayero; the former emir of Karaye, Ibrahim Abubakar; the former emir of Rano, Kabiru Muhammad-Inuwa, and former Emir of Gaya, Aliyu Ibrahim-Gaya.

Recall that the Emirs were deposed following the amendment of the Emirates laws by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The applicants of the ‘motion exparte’ that was filed against the deposed emirs are the Attorney General of Kano State, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly.

The applicants, through their legal counsel, Ibrahim Isah-Wangida, sought a court order restraining Ado-Bayero and the four dethroned emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye from parading themselves as emirs.

Justice Amina Adamu-Aliyu, while delivering judgement on the matter today, held that the Kano State House of Assembly had powers to amend and propose a bill for the peace and good governance of the state pursuant to Section 4 Rule 6,7(b) of the Nigerian Constitution.

The court, therefore, restrained the police and other security agencies from violating, disobeying, or tampering with Kano State Emirate (Repeal) Law 2024 while ordering the deposed emirs to return all properties of the Kano Emirate Council in their possession to the Kano state government.

“The Kano State Governor has the right to assent the proposed bill to law after being passed by the state assembly.” The deposed emirs shall surrender all movable and immovable properties in their possession that belong to the Kano State Emirate Council to the state government.”
