Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has declared Monday, July 8, as a public holiday to celebrate the beginning of the new Islamic calendar, 1st Muharram 1446AH, News About Nigeria reports.

The announcement was made by the state commissioner for the establishment, Auwal-Dogondaji, in a statement issued on Friday in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

Auwal-Dogondaji explained that although the 1st of Muharram falls on July 7, the state government decided to shift the public holiday to July 8 to emphasise the importance of the Islamic New Year.

He congratulated the Muslim community on the advent of the new Islamic calendar and urged them to continue their fervent prayers for peace, security, and prosperity in Kebbi and the nation as a whole.

“I extend the governor’s congratulations to the entire Muslim Ummah across the globe,” the commissioner said.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Government has also declared Monday, July 8, 2024, as a work-free day in observance of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1446AH.

This announcement was made by the state commissioner for information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who highlighted the significance of Hijrah to the state’s Muslim residents.

“Monday, July 8, 2024, has been declared a work-free day to mark the Hijrah, which signifies Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 AD,” Oyelade stated.

The commissioner said that the declaration is a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, encouraging all residents to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria.

“Let us reflect on the teachings of Hijrah and come together in the spirit of solidarity and brotherhood,” Oyelade urged.

“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation.”
