The Labour Party expressed disappointment on Tuesday over President Bola Tinubu’s repeated calls for patience from Nigerians, attributing it to the inherited near-comatose economy, News About Nigeria reports.
In a statement released in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, voiced the party’s discontent, criticising the administration for what it sees as a lack of sensitivity to the hardships faced by Nigerians over the past year.
Ifoh argued that a government responsible for severe poverty would naturally resort to numerous excuses to mask its failures.
“It is disheartening that the government cannot spare a moment to consider the sufferings of Nigerians in the past year of the current administration,” Ifoh stated.
He pointed out the lavish spending on projects such as the Vice President’s lodge and the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, describing them as insensitive to the average Nigerian.
Ifoh continued, “It was, to say the least, disheartening to hear Mr. President mock his fellow citizens by saying Nigerians are not the only ones facing poverty. Assuming but not conceding that what he said is true, Nigerians who are at the receiving end of his harsh economic policies don’t need to be reminded about the pain and hunger they have been forced to live with by the very people who put them in that situation in the first place.”
The Labour Party further criticised the administration’s focus on luxury and opulence, noting the billions earmarked for renovating the lodges of the President and Vice President and the plans to expand the presidential fleet with new jets.
“Our schools and health institutions are on their knees. The same government claims it cannot afford to pay public servants a living wage but has enough to make itself comfortable at the expense of the suffering masses,” Ifoh added.
Concluding his remarks, Ifoh urged President Tinubu to uphold his constitutional duty to protect the welfare of the populace.
