The Igbo National Council (INC) has kicked against the proposed bill of the Federal House of Assembly of presidents and governors having a single term of six years in office, News About Nigeria reports.
The INC President, Chilos Godsent, stated this while speaking to newsmen in Owerri on Thursday.
He noted that having a single term of six years would encourage presidents and governors to loot massively while in office.
The group rather advocated that the election of the president and governors should be conducted separately, maintaining that it would promote healthy competition and reduce rigging.
It also added that in the ongoing constitutional amendment, the immunity clause for the President, Vice President, Governor, and Deputy Governor should be removed from the constitution.
“The Igbo National Council (INC) Worldwide has critically x-rayed the proposal by the G-35 members of the Federal House of Representatives to propose a single six-year tenure for the President and Governors in the ongoing Constitution Amendment by the National Assembly.
“The INC condemns that proposal in its entirety, as it will encourage massive corruption in the governance system in Nigeria. Against this backdrop, we would like the National Assembly to amend the constitution to provide for the presidential election to be held separately and for the governorship to be held separately on different dates with the elections of legislators, as this will encourage healthy competition and reduce rigging.
“INC therefore calls on the National Assembly to use the opportunity of the ongoing Constitution Amendment to expunge the immunity clause for the office of the President, Vice President, Governor, and Deputy Governor,” the group stated.
