Six Rescued, 14 Still Trapped In Niger Mining Collapse

A mining site has reportedly collapsed in Galkogo village of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, leaving one dead and several others injured, News About Nigeria reports.

The Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, disclosed this on Tuesday in the State Capital.

He revealed that the unfortunate incident had happened on Monday, the 3rd of June 2024, leaving one dead, six injured and more than 30 others trapped in the collapsed building.

He stated that the agency had received a report of a mining site collapse at Galkogo village of Shiroro, noting that the cause of the mining site collapse was a result of heavy rainfall impact on the soil.

“One person had been confirmed dead, six persons rescued with severe injuries while more than 30 people were still being trapped,” the agency disclosed.

Baba-Arah also noted that the rescuers ran for safety from the site because the site kept falling, adding that the agency is yet to get the full details on rescue operations due to insecurity in the area.

He, however, stated that excavators has been deployed to the site for the rescue operations, and assured the people that the agency is on top of the situation and will ensure that more people are rescued alive.

The DG mentioned that the agency has received a report of persistent bandit attacks in Shiroro and Mashegu local government areas of the state, noting  that the bandits reportedly attacked Adogo Malam village on June 2 and kidnapped six persons.

He also revealed that the suspected bandits kidnapped more than 20 people and stole many cattle in Tunga Kawo, an adjoining community from Erena.
