To allow for an uninterrupted meeting with the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage, organised labour has decided to suspend the nationwide strike for five days.
Recall that Labour leaders had a successful meeting with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, and other government officials on Monday and reached a resolution that President Bola Tinubu was committed to a new minimum wage higher than N60,000.
News About Nigeria had earlier reported that the NLC raised a distress signal, claiming the soldiers surrounded the venue of its meeting with the federal government to negotiate a new minimum wage.
The Nigerian Army disowned claims that its men were surrounding the venue of the ongoing meeting between the National Labour Congress (NLC) and the Secretary General of the Federation (SGF).
Reacting to the situation, Army Headquarters said its men were present for different purposes.
The army wrote on X: “The attention of Army Headquarters has been drawn to a false breaking news by NLC alleging that soldiers currently surround the venue of the ongoing meeting between NLC and the SGF.
“Kindly note that the NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who is also attending the meeting, arrived at the meeting venue with his retinue of statutorily approved military escorts. Once the meeting is over, the escorts will lead the NSA from the venue.
“Kindly disregard the deliberate and misleading falsehood being peddled about the presence of the escorts at the meeting.”
They equally resolved that the Tripartite Committee would meet every day for the next week to arrive at an agreeable national minimum wage.
Today, at a meeting with the FG Tripartite Committee scheduled for 10 am, Labour suspended its strike.
With this development, every government and private office is expected to reopen and function as usual.
