A four-storey residential building collapsed at No. 15, Iga Idunganran, Lagos Island, Southwest Nigeria, with ten people rescued from the rubble.
News About Nigeria gathered that the incident occurred due to ongoing renovation works, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the rescue operations and the initial cause of the collapse.
“The Agency responded to distress calls and, upon arrival discovered that a four-storey residential building had collapsed. Information gathered at the scene revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was ongoing renovation,” he told newsmen.
The building had been marked for evacuation by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) before its collapse.
“A total of ten people are affected. All ten people, nine adults and one 17-year-old girl, have been rescued from the rubble,” Oke-Osanyintolu reported.
“Having received pre-hospital care from the agency’s paramedics, they are now at the Iga Iduganran primary health care centre receiving care.”
Oke-Osanyintolu further stated that the remains of the building would be levelled to ground zero, and adjacent buildings would undergo integrity and material testing to prevent future incidents.
Responders at the scene included the Shark team, LRU paramedics, LASBCA officials, LNSC officials, LASPPPA officials, LASAMBUS crew, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigeria Police Force.
Meanwhile, a fire broke out at the Tejuosho market in Yaba, Lagos, on Wednesday, May 29, causing damage and destroying properties worth millions of naira.
The fire, which started at around 12:30 p.m., burned numerous wooden shanties along the Tejuosho Canal, including shops and apartments.
According to eyewitness accounts, the blaze spread rapidly, fueled by the flammable materials within the market.
Emergency responders, including police personnel, officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos Fire Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Security Watch, and other agencies, were at the scene to control the inferno and prevent further damage.
