A fire broke out at the Tejuosho market in Yaba, Lagos, on Wednesday, May 29, causing damage and destroying properties worth millions of naira, News About Nigeria reports.
The fire, which started at around 12:30 p.m., burned numerous wooden shanties along the Tejuosho Canal, including shops and apartments.
According to eyewitness accounts, the blaze spread rapidly, fueled by the flammable materials within the market.
Emergency responders, including police personnel, officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos Fire Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Security Watch, and other agencies, were at the scene to control the inferno and prevent further damage.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported as of the time of filing this report.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
This incident comes just a month after a similar fire at Dosunmu Market in Lagos Island prompted Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to order the market’s closure.
The fire that happened in April at Dosunmu Market destroyed 14 buildings, leading to the collapse of four structures, and was attributed to the careless refuelling of a generator in the penthouse of one of the buildings.
Following the Dosunmu Market fire, Governor Sanwo-Olu directed the suspension of commercial activities in the affected area to prevent a recurrence.
During a spot assessment of the situation, Mrs. Bola Olumegbon Lawal, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Central Business Districts (CBD), called for stricter safety measures.
The governor assured the public that the government is committed to providing assistance to those affected and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
