Police Confirm One Dead, 23 Injured In Kano Mosque Attack

The Kano State Police Command on Friday revealed that a total of 15 persons have died from Wednesday’s attack at a mosque in Gezawa area of the state.

According to the spokesperson of Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, the death toll rose after more victims from the incident who were hospitalized continued to pass away.

News About Nigeria had reported that one person died while 28 persons were hospitalized following the attack carried out by 38-year-old Shafi’u Abubakar.

Abubakar, who was arrested confessed to having carried out the heinous attack due to a prolonged family disagreement over the sharing of inheritance.

Contrary to speculations that it was a bomb attack, Abubakar had revealed that he sprayed petrol around the mosque area, locked the door, and set the mosque on fire while the worshippers were praying, trapping over 30 of them inside the mosque.

It was also gathered that over 15 of the injured victims are still receiving treatments at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano.

Reacting to the death toll, the Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, during a visit to the hospital donated ₦3 million to support the medication of the victims

While pledging the support of the Gaya Emirate, the Emir extended his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for the repose of the dead.

He further prayed for a quick recovery for the hospitalized victims.

He said, “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims and their families during this difficult time. Gaya Emirate will provide all the necessary support to ensure a full and speedy recovery for those who were injured.”
