The National Examinations Council (NECO) has confirmed that the closing date for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) Internal Registration remains unchanged, News About Nigeria reports.
In a statement released on Thursday, NECO urged stakeholders to disregard social media posts falsely claiming that the registration deadline had been extended to Monday, June 20, 2024.
NECO said that the registration period, which began on Monday, December 18, 2023, will close as scheduled on Monday, June 3, 2024.
The council specified that late registration, subject to a late fee, will be available from Tuesday, June 4, 2024, to Monday, June 10, 2024.
“The National Examinations Council has not extended the closing date for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination Internal Registration,” NECO stated.
“The Council enjoins candidates, school principals, commandants, state ministries of education, and other stakeholders to disregard social media posts purporting that the registration period has been extended to Monday, June 20, 2024.”
The council also announced that the 2024 SSCE Internal will commence on June 19, 2024, and conclude on July 26, 2024. During this period, candidates will be assessed in 76 subjects.
Meanwhile, NECO’s Registrar, Professor Ibrahim Wushishi, addressed the complexity of transitioning from paper-based exams to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format during an interactive session with journalists in Abuja.
Professor Wushishi explained that the large number of subjects and candidates makes immediate migration to CBT challenging.
“For JAMB, they are not examining candidates in so many subject areas, so they find it very easy to embrace CBT in their examinations and do multiple choice in their rest,” he said.
“As far as NECO is concerned, if you look at the nature of our exams particularly in SSCE internal, for admissions into tertiary institutions, every year we examine close to 1.5 million students, which is a large number.”
Professor Wushishi pointed out the logistical challenges, noting that NECO examines candidates in 76 different subjects and more than 150 different papers.
NECO’s examinations include a combination of multiple choice and theory questions, with some subjects requiring practical tests conducted in laboratories.
These exams span over a month, with each student taking a minimum of nine subjects during the period.
