The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) kicked against the recent hike in electricity tariffs by the Federal Government on Monday, News About Nigeria reports.
Speaking for the academic body, the Chairman of SSANU, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) chapter, Dr. Taiwo Arobadi, said that Nigerians are not in support of the electricity tariff hike.
He also lamented that Nigerians have been going through difficult times since President Bola Tinubu came into office and removed the fuel subsidy the same day (May 29, 2023).
He further noted that SSANU OAU had joined the organised labour in the state to protest the hike in electricity tariff but on getting to the head office of the DisCo in Ile-Ife, they met a locked gate.
Arobadi said that the hike came at a very wrong time when the people were struggling to survive the current economic hardship bedeviling the nation.
He also lamented the current fuel scarcity in the country, calling on the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to remove the tariff increment and to also address other challenges that the masses are facing.
Arobadi said, “President Bola Tinubu should take one step after the other; doing everything at once is affecting Nigerians, civil servants are suffering and businessmen and women are not finding it easy. Masses are dying gradually, and petrol is selling at a rate of between N850 and N950, by the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN).
”Meanwhile, major marketers like: BOVAB, Total, NIPCO, Matrix, and Mobil are selling control prices, but one will spend the whole day before getting. The price of foodstuffs and other goods in the markets are not affordable, so we are pleading with the government to soften things for the citizenry.”
