The Kano state government has dismissed reports that a journalist was hit by a stray bullet inside the government house on Friday.
News About Nigeria reports that the government in a statement released on Saturday, by the Director General of Media and Communication to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, described the reports as “one-sided” and “misleading”.
According to the statement, Naziru Yau, a reporter with the state-owned television station, was not hit by a stray bullet as reported on social media.
Instead, he sustained injuries from metal debris from an ongoing construction project at the Government House, which has been barricaded for safety reasons.
The government assured the public of its commitment to ensuring the safety of all individuals within the premises and the state in general.
However, it cautioned journalists to verify their sources and avoid sensational reporting that could mislead the public.
The statement further said the true nature of Naziru’s injuries was revealed by medical professionals at the government house clinic, and the journalist has expressed gratitude for the prompt medical attention he received.
The government has urged the public to rely on verified information from credible sources and to refrain from spreading unsubstantiated claims.
The statement added: “Let me emphasise the need for journalists to remain vigilant while carrying out their duties, especially in environments where construction activities pose potential hazards.
“We thereby dispel any rumour that had sparked outrage and call for increased safety measures for journalists covering sensitive events.
“We also need to underscore the importance of accurate reporting and thorough investigation in mitigating misinformation and maintaining public trust.
“Additionally, have pledged to review and enhance existing safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident, we urge the public to refrain from spreading unsubstantiated claims and to rely on verified information from credible sources.”
