The Enugu State Police Command revealed on Wednesday that 16 people, comprising 14 males and two females, died in a tragic accident that occurred along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka road late Tuesday, News About Nigeria reports.

According to the command’s public relations officer, Daniel Ndukwe, who made the revelation in a statement on its official X account, two other people survived the accident that occurred when the vehicle crashed into the fence of Maduka University and caught fire.

The Police PRO further revealed that the ill-fated bus was an 18-seater bus with a Bauchi number plate, DAS 215 XA.

Ndukwe also revealed that the investigation shows that the driver of the vehicle was on high speed before he lost control and rammed into the fence.

He further noted that the deceased victims of the accident are yet to be identified because they were burned beyond recognition, while the two survivors are currently in the hospital receiving treatments.

Ndukwe, therefore, called on residents and the general public to come forward with information that can help in identifying the victims.

The statement partly reads, “The Enugu State Police Command wishes to inform the public that a lone fatal motor accident occurred today, April 30, 2024, around 5:20 p.m., at Ekwegbe, along Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road, claiming the lives of yet-to-be-identified 14 males and two females who burned beyond recognition.

“The accident involves an 18-seater white-coloured Toyota Hummer bus with a Bauchi State commercial registration that was said to have been driven at high speed, lost control, and plunged into the fence of Maduka University along the road.”
