The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has swept the chairmanship positions in 33 local government areas of Oyo State, according to results announced by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) on Sunday.
However, the African Action Congress (AAC) has rejected the results, citing widespread irregularities, violence, and intimidation, News About Nigeria reports.
AAC state chairman Kayode Babayomi alleged that the election was marred by delays in voting material distribution, misplaced materials, and PDP thugs intimidating voters.
He also claimed that security operatives were unduly influenced and that AAC members, including himself, were beaten and detained.
He said, “We observed serious delays in the distribution of voting materials, deliberately misplaced materials, the mobilisation of PDP thugs to intimidate voters, and the undue influence of security operatives.
“The Chairman and other party members were beaten and unlawfully detained, and several of our candidates’ wards were disrupted by PDP thugs. Evidence of all these fraudulent acts is properly documented online, many of which were even posted by eligible voters in Oyo State who were grossly disappointed at the show of shame displayed by Seyi Makinde.”
Makinde, a member of the PDP, is the governor of the state.
Babayomi accused OYSIEC chairman Isiaka Olagunje of compromising the electoral process and called for his sanction, investigation, arrest, and prosecution.
The AAC alleged that their strongholds were surrounded by thugs, ballot papers and boxes went missing, and massive rigging occurred.
Saturday’s local government election in Oyo State saw a low voter turnout across various areas of the state, but the exercise was largely peaceful and incident-free.
