The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the extension of the registration deadline for direct entry candidates to a later date to accommodate the surge in applications, News About Nigeria reports.
In an interview on Thursday, JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, stated that the decision to extend the closing date for direct entry registration was motivated by the board’s commitment to ensuring every Nigerian child has access to quality higher education.
Originally scheduled to end on April 11, the registration period for direct entry was initially extended by two weeks due to increased demand.
However, reports of a last-minute rush, particularly in Lagos, prompted the board to further postpone the deadline.
Mr. Benjamin urged candidates yet to register for direct entry to remain calm, assuring them that a new closing date would be announced soon.
The spokesperson attributed the extension to the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) taking place across the country.
He urged candidates to register at their earliest convenience to avoid any inconvenience.
Meanwhile, Mr. Benjamin lauded the 2024 UTME as the best in the history of public examinations in Nigeria, stating that it had met the board’s expectations.
He assured candidates who missed the examination due to late arrival or other issues unrelated to the board’s fault that they would have another opportunity to sit for the exam in the future.
The examination is specifically for candidates who were biometrically verified but were unable to take the test.
JAMB reported a total of 1.9 million registered candidates for this year’s UTME.
