The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed the popular Abuja supermarket, 4U, which is located at Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent, Wuse 2 Abuja, over sales of expired products, News About Nigeria reports.
The commission said they were able to recover bags of rice filled with weevils, expired drugs, drinks, and products in the branch during the raid of the supermarket.
Speaking during the operation, the acting Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, Adamu Ahmed Abdullahi, revealed that the supermarket is still selling caprice and stallion rice years after the companies stopped production.
According to him, this act and many other criminal activities, like inconsistent prices going on in the supermarket, show that the management of the supermarket lacked integrity.
He further noted that the products sold at 4U supermarket could no longer be guaranteed because the raid at the supermarket today shows that they are exposing consumers to unsafe products.
He said, “Nowadays, we have found out that there is a lot of pretense in what’s happening especially in markets around the major cities in the country. You go to the shelf, the product displayed is different from what appears when you come to pay at the counter, which is not acceptable, because you are frisking consumers, and some of the buyers don’t even have prices attached to them at all.
“In addition, we found out another thing that really baffles us. Nobody knows that Stallion group has stopped production for a very long time. What is happening is that some people re-bag their own local rice pretending that it is the same stallion or papa that people are used to.”
The FCCPC further pledged their commitment to fighting such criminality which is harmful to unsuspecting Nigerians.
In response to the seal of the supermarket, the general manager of 4U, Yunusa A. Yusuf, said the supermarket had no idea that the producers of the rice had stopped production.
He further noted that they are planning to expose the supplier who brought the bags of rice to them.
