A northern group has declared Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, as the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
This announcement comes just days to the party’s crucial meeting to decide its direction, News About Nigeria reports.
The Arewa PDP Transparency Group stated that the ongoing dispute within the party over leadership is unnecessary.
According to Hon. Haruna Bature, the national chairman of the Arewa PDP Transparency Group, the PDP has faced numerous leadership crises, leading to its loss of power at the national level.
The group, as such, said there is a need for capable leadership within the party.
“These Crises are largely self inflicted due to insensitivity, lack of political vision, lack of care, concern and respect for the Vision of the Founding Fathers of the Party, and for the yearnings and aspirations of the Nigerian Citizenry. Charity, they say, begins at home. A Party whose Leadership cannot take care of its own and showing good leadership definitely cannot take care of Nigeria and offer good Leadership,” the group said.
The group also addressed concerns about Wike’s appointment in a government led by the rival All Progressives Congress (APC), dismissing them as jealousy and political blindness.
They argue that the failure to rotate power to the South contributed to the PDP’s loss of central power.
The group further added, “Arewa PDP Transparency Group says no Self Serving leadership only at times of political interest, non-inclusivity, lack of concern, sustenance and responsibility in the management of the affairs of the Peoples Democratic Party and hereby endorse His Excellency, Chief Barr. Ezebuwon Nyesom Wike, CON, GSSRS, POS Africa and Life Bencher as the National Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party.”
Recall that Senator Gabriel Suswam, the senator representing Benue Northeast, on Saturday said that the PDP is united under one leadership, with Atiku as leader.
According to him, Wike, as the Minister of FCT, does not have a camp in the part.
He declared that remains that Atiku remains the leader of our party.
He said, “By being the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku is automatically the leader of the party, whom every member should look up to.”
