Lagos Government Implements Safety Measures After Recent Drowning Incidents

In response to the increase in drowning incidents across various locations in Lagos State, the government has announced stringent measures to enhance safety in public facilities, including beaches and swimming pools, News About Nigeria reports.

The directive pointed out the importance of adhering to the Lagos State Swimming Pool Regulations of 2021, which are designed to protect individuals engaging in water-related activities, whether residents or visitors.

Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Director General of the Safety Commission, expressed deep concern over the recent surge in drowning cases and the tragic loss of lives.

Mojola mentioned that these incidents have occurred in different settings, including hotel swimming pools, beaches, and the lagoon.

Some of the regulations include the mandatory presence of trained lifeguards, proper signage, incident reporting protocols, and restrictions on alcohol usage and fire around pool areas.

Mojola stressed the imperative for all operators of public swimming facilities to fully comply with these regulations to prevent further tragedies.

He outlined several measures that facility operators must implement, including, ensuring the presence of certified lifeguards during operational hours, displaying clear safety rules and emergency procedures, conducting regular safety audits and maintenance checks, providing appropriate safety equipment, including first-aid kits and enforcing strict adherence to safety guidelines by all patrons.

Moreover, Mojola stated that the Lagos State Government is taking proactive steps to enforce these regulations rigorously.

Mojola warned that any facility found to be in violation will face penalties without hesitation.

The announcement comes after the Lagos State Police Command revealed on Friday that a total of seven people had drowned in various parts of the state during the week.

According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer, these tragic incidents occurred at hotel swimming pools, beaches, and other water bodies.
