Covenant University has beaten other Nigerian universities to emerge as the best in the country, according to the latest rankings of universities worldwide for the year 2024 published by The Times Higher Education.

In Nigeria, a total of 39 universities made it onto the list, with Covenant University claiming the top position. Following closely behind is the University of Ibadan in second place, while the Federal University of Technology, Akure, and the University of Lagos secured the third and fourth spots respectively.
On the global stage, the University of Oxford retains its position at the peak for the eighth consecutive year. However, there have been changes in the ranks of other top contenders. Stanford University has climbed to second place, displacing Harvard University to fourth.
This year’s ranking involved extensive analysis, including over 134 million citations from 16.5 million research publications and feedback from 68,402 scholars worldwide. The Times Higher Education gathered data from more than 2,673 institutions, amounting to 411,789 data points.
The updated methodology, known as WUR 3.0, incorporates 18 meticulously designed performance indicators, evaluating institutions across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry connections, and international presence, it said.

Last year’s rankings also saw Covenant University leading the pack, beating the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos. Covenant University was particularly noted for its research performance, ranking 562 globally among universities.
