Governor Obaseki has reacted to the removal of his former Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, from office on Monday.
News About Nigeria reports that the governor said he never expected to work with two deputies during his eight years in office.
Governor Obaseki said this as Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, 38, was sworn in as his new deputy governor.
Obaseki, referring to Proverbs 16:9, said since there could be no gap in the government, a new deputy governor was appointed and sworn in.
Obaseki stated: “Since we started in 2016 and earned your trust for another term in 2020, I never thought I’d have to work with two deputies before my eight years were up. But as Proverbs 16:9 says: ‘You may make your plans, but it is God that directs your actions.’
“Since there can’t be a gap in government, we’ve chosen Omobayo Marvellous to be the new deputy governor of our state by agreement.”
Recall that the Edo State House of Assembly removed Shaibu on Monday, and replaced him with Omobayo. The assembly voted to remove Shaibu based on findings from a seven-person panel led by Justice S.A. Omonua, which investigated an impeachment petition against him.
The panel’s report stated that the accusation of lying under oath wasn’t proven beyond doubt, but the charge of sharing government documents was confirmed against Shaibu.
Meanwhile, in response to his impeachment, Shaibu stated in a broadcast on his official X handle that he would fight this injustice to protect Edo State and democracy’s future.
Shaibu blamed his removal on his desire to run for Edo State Governor in 2023 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying it’s his right as a Nigerian citizen.
He criticised the Assembly members for betraying their duty to the people who elected them.
