The Federal Government (FG) has announced Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration, News About Nigeria reports.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement released on Sunday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Aishetu Ndayako.
In the statement, Minister Tunji-Ojo extended his congratulations to all Muslim Ummah for the successful completion of the fasting period in the holy month of Ramadan.
He urged Muslims to embrace and embody the virtues of kindness, love, tolerance, peace, good neighbourliness, and compassion as demonstrated by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, 9th, and Wednesday, 10th April 2024 as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the minister called on Nigerians to maintain unity and work towards achieving peace and harmony in the country.
In a related development, President Bola Tinubu arrived in Lagos on Sunday ahead of the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
He was received at the presidential wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport by the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other government officials.
The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, had earlier announced that Tinubu would observe the end of Ramadan fasting in Lagos, emphasising that the President would continue official duties during and after the Eid-el-Fitr holidays.
Similarly, Vice-President Kashim Shettima arrived in Maiduguri on Sunday in preparation for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
Upon his arrival at the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, he was received by the Borno Deputy Governor, Alhaji Umar Kadafur, and other dignitaries.
Security measures have been put in place in Maiduguri and its environs ahead of the festivities, as is customary during such occasions.
The Eid-el-Fitr celebration, marking the end of Ramadan fasting, is expected to take place either on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on the sighting of the new moon heralding the Islamic month of Shawwal.
