NFF Sympathises With Odegbami Over Death Of Son

On Thursday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) sympathised with former Nigeria captain, Olusegun Odegbami, over the death of his son, Oluwagbeminiyi Omo Odegbami.

News About Nigeria reported that Odegbami announced the demise of his son on Wednesday, revealing that he passed away on Good Friday (March 30, 2024).

In his emotional tribute to his son, Odegbami disclosed that he died after a brief illness.

Giving details, he explained that he spoke to his late son a day before his demise while he was in Ghana.

He further noted that, four hours after their phone conversation, he received several phone calls that his son was not feeling fine and had been rushed to the hospital.

“Gbemi is being taken to a hospital; the hospital has referred Gbemi to another hospital. The hospital works on him for hours. Twelve hours after our first communication, and exactly five minutes past midnight, at the birth of Good Friday (a significant day in Christendom), the doctors call me for the umpteenth time that day to break my heart with the news that haunts me till now – Gbemi has passed on,” he narrated.

In a statement released by the General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF mourned the young lad, noting that the death of a child is the worst thing that can happen to anyone.

They further prayed that God would grant the former captain and his family the fortitude to bear the loss and that the soul of the deceased rest in peace.

The statement partly reads, “It is with a deep sense of sorrow that we commiserate with Dr Olusegun Odegbami. This must be a very tough period for him. We are in grief Dr Odegbami is a great friend apart from being a legend of the Nigeria game and a former captain of Nigeria. Most of us marvel at his unflagging love and zest for the Nigeria game. We pray that God gives him the fortitude to pull through these difficult moments and also grant the departed young man eternal rest.”
