Lawyer Faults Bobrisky’s Six-Month Imprisonment Sentence

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested cross-dresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, for allegedly spraying, abusing and mutilating the Naira.

The arrest was confirmed by a spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale.

According to him, Bobrisky was arrested at Pinnock Estate in Lagos State on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at about 3 pm.

News About Nigeria reports that Bobrisky is presently detained at the EFCC facility in Lagos, where he spent the night and will soon face charges in court.

Bobrisky has been in the spotlight amid ongoing debates about the legality of cross-dressing in Nigeria.

The Police spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Wednesday, said there is an intricate legal context surrounding the matter, and that there is no specific law against cross-dressing in Nigeria.

Nevertheless, considering that homosexuality is illegal in the country, he said he is aware of allegations linking some crossdressers to homosexuality, which constitutes a criminal offense.

However, he noted that there hasn’t been sufficient evidence to prosecute them.

“Crossdressing is not a crime in Nigeria, I’ve not read anywhere that it is an offence per se. But some of them that are into crossdressing, there are allegations that they are into something else, unnatural offences.

“That is where the problem lies, we need to have enough proof, credible evidence, then we can prosecute them because all those offences are natural offences in Nigeria and punishable under our law.”

He added that individuals are free to dress as they please, but if there is substantial evidence of involvement in other unlawful activities, they would be subject to legal consequences.
