Don't Lose Faith In The Country – Obasanjo Urges Nigerians

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo visited the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Saturday, stressing the importance of sacrifice and selflessness among political leaders, News About Nigeria reports.

The meeting, which took place at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital, saw Governor Obaseki warmly receiving the former President on a courtesy visit.

During the visit, Obasanjo commended Governor Obaseki for the warm reception and urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country despite the challenges it faces.

Addressing the situation in Nigeria, Obasanjo acknowledged the hardships but expressed optimism that no bad situation is insurmountable.

“The situation in Nigeria is hard, but no bad situation can’t be made good. The question is, when and how? All we should be saying to those who have the opportunity now is to do their best. It is indeed an opportunity for you to run the affairs of your country and look after your people. It is an opportunity,” Obasanjo said.

He stressed the need for current leaders to seize the opportunity to govern the country diligently and cater to the needs of its people.

He said collective responsibility is important, stating that governance should prioritise the welfare of all citizens, both present and future generations.

He urged leaders to adopt a mindset of ‘we’ instead of ‘me’ and focus on sustainable development that benefits all.

“It should not be me but we; not mine but ours; not my tomorrow but our tomorrow, and not my generation but all generations, including the generation coming. This is what sustainable development is all about. You don’t eat today and not remember the generation coming that they too have to eat, that is all it is,” he said.

Reflecting on Governor Obaseki’s developmental strides over the past seven and a half years, Obasanjo expressed satisfaction with the progress made in Edo State.

He commended the governor for briefing him on the state’s ongoing initiatives and projects.
