The Nigerian Army revealed on Tuesday that the 17 soldiers who were killed in the Okuama community in Delta State are to be buried on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at the National Cemetery, Abuja.
Their burial ceremony was announced in a flyer that was posted on the Nigerian Army’s X handle on Tuesday.
According to the flyer, the burial will be held by 3 pm on Wednesday.
The Nigerian Army, through the hashtag in the post, prayed that the souls of the deceased would rest in peace.
They further charged citizens to appreciate and thank a Nigerian soldier because they risked their lives for the people and the nation.
News About Nigeria recalls that the soldiers were killed by suspected residents of the Okuama Community on March 14, 2024.
They were reportedly ambushed and murdered while responding to a distress call during a clash between the Okuama and Okoloba communities in the South-southern state.
Among the deceased are the Commanding Officer of the 181 Army Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 13 soldiers.
Following their deaths, the Army has vowed that it will comb every nook and cranny until the perpetrators of the heinous act are brought to justice.
In line with this, the Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, issued a directive that troops be deployed to bring their killers to book.
Also reacting to the tragic incident, President Bola Tinubu, while condemning the killing of the soldiers, issued a directive that a proper investigation be carried out.
He further tasked the state governor with working with traditional rulers and security agencies for the arrest of the killers.
