Abia Governor Announces Plans To Secure $125 Million Loans For 2024 Budget Implementation

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has revealed that the state government intends to secure loans to implement the 2024 budget.

During a chat with journalists in Umuahia, the state capital, Otti disclosed that the Islamic Development Bank has approved $125 million for the state, while the African Development Bank has also approved funds.

“We have received offers of loan from commercial banks, but we have not drawn on any of them. We do not want to draw loans until we need them and will repay when we have liquidity, and we will pay later,” Otti said.

Regarding wage awards or salary increases, Otti assured workers that his administration had not withdrawn its promise on that matter and mentioned the existence of a committee to address it.

“We had promised that by the end of this month, we would resolve the lingering pension issues. In our executive council meeting today, we had some resolutions, and soon, pensioners will be settled,” he said.

Addressing infrastructure development, Otti said the state is committed to road rehabilitation, improving the healthcare system, and enhancing the education sector.

He mentioned that there are plans to rehabilitate 170 primary schools and 51 secondary schools to raise educational standards.

Otti added that the state government will revamp Abia schools, ensuring they meet global standards.

He mentioned that trained teachers will incorporate relevant subjects such as internet literacy, renewable energy, and digital technology to equip Abia students for the 21st century.

In terms of healthcare delivery, Otti pledged to continue improving services.

He also mentioned that the state will put in place initiatives to address food security, stating that efforts are underway to cultivate all lands in Abia during the planting season.

“We will continue to improve healthcare delivery in the state,” Otti said.
