37-Year-Old Nigerian Caregiver Slumps, Dies In The UK

A 37-year-old Nigerian woman, Chidimma Susan Ezenyili, working as a caregiver in the United Kingdom (UK), collapsed while on duty and passed away two days later.

Known as Suzy, Ezenyili, a qualified lawyer in Nigeria, migrated to the UK with her husband and toddler daughter on sponsorship visas in August 2023.

News About Nigeria gathered that Ezenyili had been caring for 86-year-old Ian Hale in Bishop’s Stortford for the past five months.

On February 22, she collapsed while on duty after showing some signs of illness but managed to work before her sudden collapse.

According to Catherine Segal, Hale’s daughter, Ezenyili collapsed on the street while caring for Ian Hale.

“She (Ezenyili) was driven there by her husband with their three-year-old daughter, as she wasn’t feeling well but didn’t want to let my dad down.

“Naturally, her husband started shouting for help. The neighbourhood raced to help. Myself and my husband ran outside along with our next-door neighbour and our neighbour from across the road,” Segal said.

Efforts were made by the community and emergency responders to save her life. She was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, where doctors discovered she had suffered a severe brain haemorrhage.

Unfortunately, life support was turned off two days later, and she passed away on February 24.

Ezenyili’s husband, Friday, was by her side during her final moments.

Segal described her as a kind, considerate, and helpful caregiver.

Segal said, “Suzy came here as a carer to fill a need in our community. She was qualified in law in Nigeria and was planning to attain her qualifications to practice law here after her sponsorship as a carer finished.

“She was a really good carer. Kind, considerate, and always willing to help, no matter what the circumstances.”
