The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially lifted the visa restrictions imposed on Nigerian travellers with the resumption of visa services effective March 4, 2024, News About Nigeria reports.
The move comes after an over-four-month-long ban that affected citizens from approximately 20 African nations, including Nigeria.
The UAE implemented the visa restriction in October 2022, affecting several African countries.
The ban prompted discussions and negotiations between Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and the UAE’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayad Al Nahyan.
A joint statement issued by the governments of Nigeria and the UAE announced the positive development, stating, “The government of Nigeria and the government of the United Arab Emirates are delighted to announce a pivotal development in our diplomatic relations: the resumption of visa services for Nigerian citizens wishing to visit the UAE, commencing on 4th March 2024.”
Nigerian applicants for UAE visas are now required to obtain a Document Verification Number by visiting a dedicated online platform.
Applicants are advised to closely follow the new guidelines, applying through designated travel agents and completing the process at the UAE Embassy in Abuja or Lagos.
UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, Saleem Saeed Al-Shamsi, said that the visa service resumption is more than a procedural update; it signifies the evolving relationship between Nigeria and the UAE.
The move is expected to lead to increased tourism, business exchanges, and cultural sharing between the two nations.
“This initiative not only facilitates personal and professional travel but also symbolises a step towards deeper understanding and cooperation between two dynamic societies. As both nations embark on this renewed journey, the potential for shared prosperity and mutual respect is boundless, heralding a new era in Nigeria-UAE relations,” the statement read.
