The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Army to democratic leadership in the nation, News About Nigeria reports.
Speaking at a seminar for Nigerian Army officers in Abuja on Tuesday, Labaja noted that operatives of the service have accepted the democratic system of government that is in place in the country.
He further noted that personnel of the Nigerian Army under his leadership are agents of democracy and have no intention to truncate it through any coup.
While countering recent rumours that the Force is trying to take over leadership through a coup against the President Bola Tinubu-led government, Labaja noted that such allegations are dumb and unfounded as the Army is not towing parts of other African countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic.
He further stated that the Nigerian Army is dedicated and committed to upholding the constitution of the nation.
In his own words, “Permit me to seize this opportunity to reiterate that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, particularly the Nigerian Army has come to terms with the country’s choice of democracy as the preferred system of governance. We are therefore agents of democracy and have no desire to truncate it.
“The Nigerian Army will continue to defend our constitution and not suspend it for whatever reason. It is the duty of our elected leaders to lead while the military does its job as enshrined in our constitution. Nigerian Army personnel must therefore remain professional and be above board as they discharge their constitutional duties.”
Labaja, therefore, assured the federal government of their commitment regardless of the current economic challenges bedevilling the nation, as they believe that President Tinubu is working tirelessly towards addressing the challenge.
