Senate In Support Of Irukera's Sack As FCCPC Boss

The Senate has stated that it is in total support of President Bola Tinubu’s decision to sack Babatunde Irukera as the Chief Executive/Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), News About Nigeria reports.

The Senate gave its approval to the sack on Wednesday, following the appeal of the Executive Communication to the Senate to consider the request of President Bola Tinubu on the removal of Babatunde Irukera as Chief Executive/Vice-Chairman of FCCPC.

The Executive Communication noted that its request was in accordance with Section 8(1)(b) & (2) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission Act, 2018 as presented by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, APC, Ekiti Central.

Recall that in January 2024, President Tinubu wrote to the Senate, asking that it approve the disengagement of Mr. Babatunde Irukera as the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Commission.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, however, explained the reason for the removal of Babatunde Irukera as Chief Executive of FCCPC, stating that it was due to his inability to effectively perform the duties that was expected of him as an occupant of that office.

He noted that it has become pertinent to restructure and reposition critical agencies of the federal government to allow for efficiency and effectiveness.

President Bola Tinubu also added that the move is in line with his administration’s drive to strengthen the mechanisms aimed at protecting the rights of Nigerian consumers and provide a strong basis for enhanced contributions to the nation’s economy by key growth-enabling institutions.
