In response to the economic challenges in the country, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has rolled out some measures aimed at cushioning the effect on citizens, News About Nigeria reports.
Speaking during an ongoing media parley on economic hardship, Governor Sanwo-Olu mentioned steps that include reducing public servants’ working days and implementing discounts in food markets.
Governor Sanwo-Olu announced that effective next week, civil servants at lower levels will be working three times a week, while those at levels 15-17 can work four times a week.
“We want to start with our public servants, immediately from next week, civil servants from the lower level will be working like three times a week and level 15-17 can work four times in a week,” Sanwo-Olu said.
To address the issue of escalating food prices, the governor stated that the government would establish Sunday markets in 42 identified markets across Lagos State.
These markets will offer discounted prices on food items, with a limit of up to N25,000 per purchase.
In addition to these measures, Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed that there would be a 25% reduction in transport services starting this weekend for the State Public Transport system, including BRT, Train, and Ferry.
The governor is also engaged in discussions with various transport unions to encourage fare reductions.
Expressing empathy for citizens grappling with economic challenges, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of leadership in addressing socioeconomic problems.
He urged the private sector to play a role in alleviating the situation, encouraging businesses to replicate the support they provided during the COVID-19 pandemic.
