'There Will Be Three-Day Thunderstorm Across Nigeria From Wednesday' - NiMet Forecast

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a warning that the ongoing excessive heat in the country is expected to persist for some time, News About Nigeria reports.

In its weather and climate update posted on its official X page on Wednesday, NiMET outlined the implications of the high temperatures and guided the public on how to manage the situation.

With air temperatures reaching 41°C over the north and 39°C over the south, NiMET’s model projections indicate that the high temperatures will continue in the coming days.

NiMET stated that some of the implications of heat include dehydration, which can lead to fainting, chickenpox disease, measles, heat rash, weakness of the body, slight fever, dry lips, heat-related illnesses, respiratory issues, and increased vulnerability to chronic conditions.

In its advisory guidelines, the agency said that citizens should take adequate fluids, seek shade, use fans, and wear light, breathable clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures.

NiMET also asked citizens to avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours (stay indoors as much as possible between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm).

The Ogun State Ministry of Environment also echoed this warning, emphasising the need for smart adaptation strategies and climate-resilient practices to cope with the effects of the prolonged heatwave.

Common effects on humans include dehydration, chickenpox, heat rash, and psychological stress.

Residents are urged to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their health during this period of elevated temperatures.

“You would have noticed recently that the heat during the day and night has been unbearably high. This is a result of heat waves stemming from the emission of greenhouse gases. @nimetnigeria has warned Nigerians to prepare for more hot days and warm nights.

“This preparation will require smart adaptation strategies and engaging in climate-resilient practices to cope with the damage that has been done,” the Ministry’s statement read.
