The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has been sworn in for his second term in office, News About Nigeria reports.

Both Governor Diri and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, took their oaths of office on Wednesday at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The governor took his oaths of office and allegiance, which were administered by the state chief judge, Justice Matilda Ayemieye, at 2 pm today.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Diri stated that though his administration was able to do well in their first term in office, a lot still needs to be done in this second term.

He said, “We achieved remarkable milestones in various sectors during our first term, and we also recognise that there is still more to be done. We can say with humility that in the last four years, we did not merely count the years, we have made the years truly count.”

He also appreciated the people of the state for trusting him to lead them for a second term.

Douye added that he would ensure that the people’s expectations of them in this second term in office are met.

Present at the swearing-in of the Bayelsa state governor and his deputy are the vice president, Kashim Shettima, and former president Olusegun Obasanjo.

Also, former president Goodluck Jonathan, who is also a former governor of the state, was in attendance.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced that Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled a total of 175,196 votes to defeat his main rival, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 110,108 votes in the fiercely contested November 11, 2023, off-cycle election.

Before becoming the Governor of Bayelsa state, Diri was the senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District from 2019 to 2020 in the 9th National Assembly.
